In the heart of the Great Depression, 1935 was a year that demanded resilience and ingenuity.
For Luther Alexander (L.A.) Barrier, it marked the beginning of a journey that would lay the foundation for L. A. Barrier & Son Inc. Given a Studebaker dump truck in Salisbury, North Carolina, L.A. faced a straightforward yet daunting proposition: succeed with the truck and keep it, or fail and return it. Determined to provide for his family, L.A. sought work wherever he could find it, starting with local rock quarries and contractors who needed stone and topsoil hauled. His perseverance and hard work paid off, and he secured enough jobs to keep the truck.
As L.A.’s reputation for reliability and diligence spread, so did the demand for his hauling services. To keep up with the growing workload, he purchased a house trailer, which allowed he and his family to move from county to county in search of new opportunities. This mobility was key to L.A.’s success, enabling him to follow the work and continually grow his business. When one truck was no longer sufficient to meet the demand, L.A. made the pivotal decision to expand his fleet, laying the groundwork for a thriving enterprise in industrial, residential, and commercial hauling.
The business continued to grow, and in 1968, L.A. Barrier & Son Inc. relocated to its current location in Lexington, South Carolina.
This move marked a new chapter in the company’s history, solidifying its presence in the region and allowing for further expansion in the South Carolina hauling industry. Over the decades, the company has remained a family-owned business, passing down the values of hard work, integrity, and dedication from generation to generation. Now in its third generation of family ownership, L.A. Barrier & Son Inc. has become a stalwart of the hauling services industry in the Southeast.
Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our affiliations and certifications. As proud members of the South Carolina Trucking Association and the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, we stay connected with industry standards and community values. Furthermore, our certification with the South Carolina Department of Transportation as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise underscores our dedication to diversity and inclusivity in our operations.
In 2006, the company saw a significant milestone when Lisa Tyson was appointed as president. Under her leadership, L.A. Barrier & Son Inc. has continued to flourish, building on the legacy of innovation and service established by L.A. Barrier himself. Lisa’s vision and commitment have guided the company through the complexities of modern business while staying true to the core values that have defined us from the beginning.
